DIAPHRAGM CHUCK FOR PRECISION MACHINING
The design of GMT Diaphragm Chuck is primarily for light accurate turning, fine boring, facing and grinding operations. During precision machining operations the diaphragm chuck enables high accuracy and consistent concentricity.
Compressed air is fed through a stationary distributor to the piston. Furthermore, the piston flexes the diaphragm, which opens the jaws, enabling the loading of work piece on the chuck. When you release the air pressure, the diaphragm returns to its normal position, closing the jaws to grip the work piece.
Diaphragm is made up of spring steel and toughened. Base jaws are nickel chrome steel. These are case hardened and precision ground. Piston is made up of forged steel and toughened. Stop plate, provides the face butting for the component. The stop plate is in the non-moving housing and provides for accurate end location.
Top jaws are optional and the design is as per the component configuration. Grinding of the jaws ensure the positioning of the particular component. Lubro control unit is available as optional.
Besides, it is important to remember that a diaphragm chuck is a precision tool. For that reason, do not use hammers and ill-fitting wrenches. Hence, always handle with care to ensure top performance. GMT recommends surrounding type jaws for fragile or thin wall parts. Also make sure that all stop faces are clean from chips and grit. Ensure the chuck actuates smoothly.
